Martie and Marie Begell of Coudersport, PA

03 Jan

I actually stumbled upon today’s genealogical tidbit on eBay! Right now (and for the next 6 days) there is an antique cabinet photo of a pair of children, Martie & Mattie Begell, from Coudersport (Potter County) PA.Begall family Coudersport

Here is the description given by the seller:
Antique Genealogy Item #88AV
Vintage Victorian 19th c. Cabinet Card Photo of Martie & Mattie Begall Begell

On reverse: “Martie & Mattie Begall, Uncle Frank to oldest” handwritten in old pencil. Photo type: Cabinet Card photograph. Photographer: L.R. Bliss Photo Studio. Corner of Main & First Streets, Coudersport, Pennsylvania, Potter County. Found in Albany County NY.  We belive the surname to be Begell, not Begall.

I found the following in census records:

Martin Eugene Begell (Martin Begall)
Birth Date: 1 Feb 1885
Birth Place: Potter Co, Pennsylvania
1942 Residence: Essex, New Jersey

Mattie Begell [Mattie Beyell]
Home in 1900: Clymer, Tioga, Pennsylvania
Birth Date: Sep 1886
Birthplace: Pennsylvania
Relationship to head-of-house: Daughter
Father’s Name: Benjamin Begell
Mother’s Name: Charlotte Begell

children in household
Martin Begell 15
Mattie Begell 13
Grant Begell 10
Lawrence Begell 9
Warren Begell 6

1900 census, martin 13 mattie 10 in Clymer, Tioga PA, son of Benjamin and
Charlotte another spelling Beegle and another Buckley.

A beautiful close up image of two young children in beautiful clothing.
Marie appears to be about 4-5 years old and his sister Mattie appears about 2.5 years.
We found Begall family in nearby Cornell NY, Steuben County. Do you know this Begall family?
Do you know what the reference to Frank is? May be a Frank Snyder, as found with Ida
Chase Northrup photo listed now also, her first husband was Frank.

The eBay listing also has a larger picture of the kids and also has a picture of the back of the photo with its description.
