OTD: Happy Anniversary John & Nancy!

08 Dec

ON THIS DAY…

On Saturday, December 8, 1849, JOHN MIX married NANCY THURBER in Bolivar, NY (Allegany County). I’ve never found a reference to John having a middle name, although Nancy is listed in their big family Bible as “Nancy A.” Other family records identify her middle name as “ANN.”

At their wedding, John was a 23 year old (who would turn 24 in less than three weeks), and Nancy was almost two months into being a 17 year old. They would be together until John’s death in 1894. They raised seven children.

The picture reprinted from the Potter Leader Enterprise in the summer of 1995, was probably taken around 1890 and John is wearing his CIvil War medals.
